Except Ariel wasn’t trying to fit into society. Ariel was going AGAINST society to try and become the person she wanted to be.
Her entire story is about being who you want to be- even if your family doesn’t support you, even if other people make it hard for you, even if you can’t talk to other people and make them understand. Ariel knew what she wanted and she went out and made it happen.
And I think it’s kind of crummy to twist her story around with this kind of trivial misreading.

yes lets just ignore the fact that she wanted to change who she was for a man.

bahaha, yeah..let’s give a big round of applause to Disney for showing girls its okay to leave everything behind and rebel for a man. >___<

Except, as we’ve been discussing, it isn’t really for Eric.
Ariel wanted to go to the surface before she met Eric. She thought of the surface as a place of freedom and empowerment. A place where she could do and be what she liked. Remember, “bright young women, sick of swimming, ready to stand”?
When she meets Eric, she doesn’t instantly run off. She rescues him, takes him back to the beach, and then goes home. She still wants that future, but is willing to wait.
THEN Her father shows up in her space, smashes all of her stuff, and forbids her to ever go to the surface. THAT is her tipping point.
It isn’t as simple as “Ariel wanted a boyfriend.” It was “Ariel had associated this place, and eventually yes this person, with freedom, empowerment, and being the person she wants to be. When her father refuses to accept her for who she is in a very VIOLENT fit of rage, Ariel removes herself from a place where she doesn’t feel safe or accepted and tries to achieve her dreams on her own.”
There are some problematic elements with this movie, yes. But Ariel wanting to go to te surface and leaving her family to do so isn’t one of them.
